Vancouver Island University and Cat® Simulators: Bridging Education and Innovation

Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Nanaimo, British Columbia, continues to lead the way in trades education with its Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) Certificate Program. A blend of cutting-edge, simulation-based training and hands-on fieldwork, the program is designed to meet the demands of the construction, mining and forestry industries.

More than 3,000 students have successfully completed the HEO training program, according to Kevin Levins, a 20-year veteran instructor in VIU’s HEO program, which features four Cat® Simulators systems: Motor Grader, Dozer, Log Loader and Track Feller Buncher.

“We’ve worked hard to keep our programs aligned with evolving industry standards and technological advancements. Cat Simulators have been a tremendous asset in our efforts and are a key part of how we stay relevant and effective,” explained Levins, who added that Cat Simulators are at the heart of the program’s innovation.

5 Reasons to Use Simulation Now

Simulation training is an effective method for teaching tasks, techniques, and processes by immersing learners in realistic scenarios within a safe virtual environment. This approach enables organizations to deliver consistent learning experiences to multiple individuals simultaneously. It is particularly successful in industries such as heavy equipment operation, where safety, the high cost of machinery and the advanced technology involved require a hands-on training approach.

One of the key benefits of simulation training is the immediate feedback learners receive while training on a simulator. This feedback helps them apply the skills they are learning to real-life situations. Additionally, simulation training allows learners to practice operating machinery virtually and safely before handling actual equipment, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.

Simulator training offers numerous advantages, including eliminating risks, lowering training costs and enhancing learning through practice. Discover the five reasons why simulation training can benefit your organization. Read more.

Hazards and Toxic Materials on Construction Sites Infographic

Construction workers can be exposed to numerous dangers while working on a jobsites, which can include toxic chemicals and materials. To protect themselves and prevent long-term health issues, workers should know what potential hazards could be found on construction worksites.

Blind Spot Animated Infographic

When heavy equipment operators inside a cab have limited visibility and cannot see objects directly or with mirrors, blind spots can occur. Each machine has its own blind spots, which can pose a significant risk to jobsite workers and personnel as well as objects and equipment.
